  32.  
  33. This is the first beta release of the mach32 FlexDesk Windows Driver.
  34.  
  35. To install this release, if it was downloaded from Compuserve please
  36. unpack the distribution files onto a diskette, or to a separate directory,
  37. prior to running th einstall program. (See next paragraph)
  38.  
  39. Run the supplied INSTALL.EXE utility. Specify the diskette or directory
  40. containing the driver, then your Windows directory.
  41.  
  42. Use the Microsoft Windows SETUP utility (from DOS) and select the "ATI
  43. mach32 Driver". This will complete the driver installation. To restore
  44. your previous display driver, run SETUP, and reselect the old driver.
  45.  
  46. To change resolution or color depth, please run the FlexDesk Control Panel
  47. that was installed into Windows. The driver initially comes up in 640x480
  48. 16 color mode. Other modes can be easily selected from the FlexDesk
  49. Control Panel.
  50.  
  51. This driver supports the ATI 68800 (mach32) with 512KB, 1MB or 2MB of
  52. memory. 16, 256, 32K, 65K and 16.7M color modes are supported in
  53. resolutions of 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024.
  54.  
  55. Only modes supported by your card will be enabled in the FlexDesk driver.
  56. Unsupported modes will be greyed out.
  57.  
  58. FlexDesk will only work with Windows in 386 Enhanced Mode. To use the mach
  59. 32 on a 286 based processor, or in Windows Standard Mode, use the supplied
  60. Microsoft 8514/A driver.
  61.  
  62. Crystal Fonts is supported in this beta.

  64.  
  65. 2.0     Reporting Bugs
  66.  
  67. When reporting problems with this driver, please reference the driver
  68. build number. When in doubt about the build number, call up the FlexDesk
  69. Control Panel, and read the build number. If the build number is not
  70. available (NA), then
  71.  
  72. (a)     You may not be running the FlexDesk driver. Check that one of the
  73.         MACH-??.DRV files is referenced in SYSTEM.INI.
  74.  
  75. (b)     Your bug may be preventing the Control Panel from reading the
  76.         driver build number. Try restarting Windows, and if this does not
  77.         remedy the problem, report the Date, Time and Size of the driver
  78.         (MACH.DRV file).
  79.  
  80. (c)     You may be using BitStream Facelift 2.0. If you are using this
  81.         Typeface Manager, report the Date, Time and Size of the driver
  82.         (MACH.DRV file).
  83.

  95. important existing data/programs before installing or running the

  180. 4.0     Requirements
  181.  
  182. FlexDesk requires an ATI 68800 (mach32) based graphics controller. The
  183. driver is designed to work best with Windows 3.1. Windows 3.0 operation is
  184. possible, at the expense of some features and performance. Windows must be
  185. in Enhanced mode for FlexDesk to run.

  187. A minimum of 512KB of Video Memory is required for FlexDesk operation.

  204. This should only be attempted if the Automatic Install Fails!!

  206. Manual installation of the FlexDesk driver is not recommended. Use the
  207. Microsoft SETUP utility to initially install the driver, and then use the
  208. FlexDesk Control Panel to make modifications to the setup. This section
  209. serves to document the various changes that are made to the SYSTEM.INI and
  210. WIN.INI files. For more information on the [Mach] settings, see the
  211. Configuration section.

  256. flip-flopping to keep Windows icon colors correct when changing between
  257. different 16 and 24 bpp modes.

  271. Each of the shell drivers (MACH-??.DRV) has suggested Windows default
  272. colors. In order to make use of these colors, you can delete the entries
  273. in the WIN.INI [colors] section. This will prevent inadvertently selecting
  274. colors that make the menu entries disappear.

  277. 6.0     Configuration Settings

  290.  
  291. The [Mach] section of WIN.INI has many switches which can be tailored to
  292. change FlexDesk. Most of the switches are alterable via the FlexDesk
  293. Control Panel, and this is the preferred way to change them.
  294.  
  295. CacheCharacters         = on | off                      Default on
  296.  
  297. Allow for caching characters into the off-screen memory area. Edit WIN.INI
  298. [Mach] directly to modify this setting.
  299.  
  300. ColorWeight16           = 555 | 565 | 655 | 664         Default 565
  301.  
  302. Choose color weighting when PixelDepth=16 is active. The number is
  303. interpreted as the number of Red, Green and Blue bits. For instance, 565
  304. allots 5 bits for Red, 6 bits for Green and 5 bits for Blue. 655 and 664
  305. modes are only available on TI and ATI 68860 DACs. Use the FlexDesk
  306. Control Panel to modify this setting.
  307.  
  308. DesktopSize             = 640 | 800 | 1024 | 1280       Default 640
  309.  
  310. Choose size of Windows work area. The screen may be smaller than the work
  311. area (see ScreenSize setting), in which case the Virtual Desktop feature
  312. is activated. Use the mouse to pan the display over the desktop. 640
  313. selects 640x480, 800 selects 800x600, 1024 selects 1024x768 and 1280
  314. selects 1280x1024. All modes have 4:3 aspect (which results in square
  315. pixels), except 1280. (1280x1024 is a 5:4 pixel ratio. Square pixels 4:3
  316. with 1280 would be 1280x960). Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify
  317. this setting.
  318.  
  319. Dithering               = on | off                      Default on
  320.  
  321. Allow for disabling color dithering. This results in faster performance,
  322. at the expense of color fidelity. Edit WIN.INI [Mach] directly to modify
  323. this setting.
  324.  
  325. DeviceBitmap            = on | off                      Default on
  326.  
  327. Allow for realizing bitmaps in the off-screen memory area. For some
  328. applications (for example BitStream Facelift), this feature must be turned
  329. off. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.

  333. Allow the drawing engine to draw into realized bitmaps. DeviceBitmap=on

  343. When set on, all startup errors are treated as fatal, and will result in
  344. returning to the DOS prompt. When set to off, a message is displayed and
  345. the user is invited to press <D> to return to the DOS prompt, or <I> to
  346. ignore the error and continue. Edit WIN.INI [Mach] directly to modify this
  347. setting.

  349. PaletteManager          = on | off                      Default on
  350.  
  351. Enable palette management when PixelDepth=8. This allows applications to
  352. control the physical palette, and permits applications such as After Dark
  353. to do palette cycling animation. When the PaletteManage is off, the color
  354. mode will use a fixed 332 (3 bits Red, 3 bits Green, 2 bits Blue) palette.
  355. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.
  356.  
  357. Pixel                   = on | off                      Default off
  358.  
  359. Enable put and get pixel through the engine. Can improve performance when
  360. aperture is disabled.

  364. Choose number of bits per pixel. 4 allows 16 colors, 8 allows 256 colors
  365. and 16 allows 32768 (in 555 mode) or 65536 colors. 24 provides for 16.7
  366. million colors. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.

  368. Polygon                 = on | off                      Default on
  369.  
  370. When set on, Polygons are accelerated by the drawing engine. Edit WIN.INI
  371. [Mach] directly to modify this setting.

  375. When set on, PolyLines are accelerated by the drawing engine. Edit WIN.INI
  376. [Mach] directly to modify this setting.

  390. When on, VGA style dithering is used (when in 256 color palette manager
  391. enabled mode). When off, a faster dithering algorithm is used. Use the
  392. FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.

  396. Enable driver StretchBlt when on. If set to off, GDI StretchBlt will be

  401. Forces Virtual Aperture when set to on. When set to off, Virtual Aperture
  402. is enabled automatically when the Physical Aperture is disabled (through

  407. Forces Virtual Aperture using Engine Blits when set to on. Edit WIN.INI

  412. Program VGA DAC in synch with 8514/A DAC registers. Edit WIN.INI [Mach]
  413. directly to modify this setting.

  415. WIFE                    = on | off                      Default off

  417. Support Windows Intelligent Font Extensions (MBCS support). This allows
  418. FlexDesk to be used with Asian Windows versions. Do not turn this switch
  419. on with North American Windows. WIFE will just slow down your system. Edit
  420. WIN.INI [Mach] directly to modify this setting.
  421.  
  422. CrystalFonts            = on | off                      Default off
  423.  
  424. When set on, enables the CRYSTAL Font feature. When CRYSTAL Fonts is
  425. enabled, the palette is fixed in 8 bpp non- programmable mode. 5 gradients
  426. of red, blue and green (125 colors) are available in the palette. Also the
  427. usual 20 Windows system colors are supported, and 16 shades of gray
  428. (including black and white). The remainder of the palette is unused.
  429.  
  430. GSFonts                 = <path: c:\gsfonts>            Default NONE
  431.  
  432. If this entry is specified, the directory path is used to search for the
  433. CRYSTAL Font outlines. If not specified (normal), the environment variable
  434. GSFONTS is used instead.
  435.  
  436. MinFontSize             = <number: 0..255>              Default 8
  437.  
  438. Minimum height of a font in pixels to be anti-aliased (CRYSTAL Fonts). If
  439. a font renders to less than MinFontSize, it is not anti-aliased. This
  440. allows very small characters to remain legible.
  441.  
  442. SystemFont              = <font>                        Default HelveticaBold
  443.  
  444. Allows the Windows System Font to be specified when CrystalFonts=on. This
  445. font is used for Icon titles, menus, etc. This entry should be used with
  446. Windows 3.0 only, because Windows 3.1 allows changing the System font
  447. through its own mechanism.
  448.  
  449. TextGamma               = <number: 20..300>             Default 100
  450.  
  451. This setting controls the edge sharpness for the CRYSTAL Fonts feature.
  452. Higher values lighten up the edge pixels, giving you "thinner" characters.
  453.  
  454. PanDown                 = <keystroke>                   Default NONE
  455.  
  456. Set the DeskScan function PanDown. The PanDown function moves the desktop
  457. down using the keyboard. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this
  458. setting.

  471. Set the DeskScan function PanLeft. The PanLeft function moves the desktop
  472. to the left using the keyboard. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify
  473. this setting.

  477. Set the DeskScan function PanRight. The PanRight function moves the
  478. desktop to the right using the keyboard. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to
  479. modify this setting.

  482.  
  483. Set the DeskScan function PanUp. The PanUp function moves the desktop up
  484. using the keyboard. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.

  486. ZoomIn                  = <keystroke>                   Default NONE

  488. Set the DeskScan function ZoomIn. The ZoomIn function magnifies the
  489. display. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.

  491. ZoomOut                 = <keystroke>                   Default NONE

  493. Set the DeskScan function ZoomOut. The ZoomOut function allows more of the
  494. display to be visible. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this
  495. setting.

  510. 7.0     Crystal Font Installation
  511.  
  512. If you've installed this beta then crystal fonts is ready to go. Bring up
  513. the FlexDesk Control Panel and choose 256 colors then click on the Crystal
  514. Font button. Set this dialog box as desired and Crystal is running.
  515.  
  516. To set System Font for program manager edit your WIN.INI file, [Mach]
  517. section, SystemFont value.
  518.

  534. The CRYSTAL Fonts feature can use Windows 3.1 TrueType fonts and ATI GSF
  535. format fonts. Use of GSF fonts requires that the CRYSTAL fonts be placed
  536. in a directory. In the WIN.INI file set GsFonts in the [Mach] section to
  537. the directory the fonts are in prior to running the driver. GSFONTS are
  538. not currently distributed, as they have been superceded by TrueType. See
  539. Configuration setting of this document for details on the Crystal Fonts
  540. settings (CrystalFonts, GSFonts, MinFontSize, SystemFont and TextGamma).
  541.  
  542.  
  543. 8.0     Errors
  544.  
  545. All FlexDesk error messages are issued at startup. The error message is
  546. displayed, and the system speaker is beeped. You are then invited to press
  547. a key to return to DOS. This behavior can be modified to allow the
  548. operator to ignore the error and proceed (see the ErrorFatal switch).
  549.  
  550. Errors:
  551.  
  552. The ATI FlexDesk Windows Driver requires an ATI 68800 or 38800 based
  553. video board or product.
  554.  
  555. The BIOS ROM cannot be accessed. Please refer to your owners manual
  556. for hardware setup assistance.
  557.  
  558. The ROM BIOS Query has returned a failure. Please ensure that the BIOS ROM
  559. is enabled, and that you have set up at least one video mode.
  560.  
  561. You have insufficient Video Memory to run a ???x???/??? video mode. Run
  562. Windows SETUP from DOS and select a lower resolution mode.
  563.  
  564. The ATI FlexDesk Windows Driver requires Windows to be run in 386 Enhanced
  565. Mode. Select the Microsoft 8514/A Driver to use your video board with
  566. a 286 based processor, or to use Windows in Standard Mode. If necessary,
  567. Windows Enhanced Mode can be forced on a 386 base processor by starting
